Where do I apply if I have charges in another province?

You must apply directly to the legal aid plan in the province or territory where the charges are being heard.

If your charges are in Ontario, contact us at 416-979-1446 or toll-free at 1-800-668-8258.

See below for further information about how LAO will assist in your legal matter, depending on your status as an Ontario resident.

Legal Matter Action LAO Will Take
  • If you are an Ontario resident with a legal matter taking place before a court in Quebec; or
  • You are an Ontario resident presently living outside of Canada and you have a legal matter pertaining to the province of Ontario; or
  • You are an out-of-province resident applying for a change of lawyer on a certificate provided by LAO; or
  • You are an out-of-province resident applying for a Family, CYFSA, Immigration, Criminal or Civil matter/appeal as it pertains to the province of Ontario; or
  • You are the respondent in Ontario seeking representation to respond to a Hague Convention application in Ontario
  1. A representative will create or update your profile, screen you for financial eligibility and transfer you to an intake representative.
  • If you are an Ontario resident with a Family, Immigration, Civil or Criminal legal matter taking place before a court outside of Ontario (with the exception of Quebec)
  1. A representative will refer you to the Legal Aid Plan where the court proceedings are taking place.*

*Exception: An LAO representative will create or update your profile, screen you for financial eligibility and transfer you to an intake representative if you are:

  • In custody
  • Elderly
  • Pregnant and due soon
  • Disabled
  • Hospitalized
  • Institutionalized; OR
  • You would like to apply in Ontario
  • If you are an Ontario resident with a legal matter outside of Canada; or
  • You are an Ontario resident and are waiving criminal charges from another province to Ontario
  1. A representative will refer you to the Legal Aid Plan where the court proceedings are taking place
  • If you are an out-of-country resident and you have a legal matter pertaining to the province of Ontario; or
  • You are an out-of-country resident applying for a change of lawyer on a certificate provided by LAO; or
  • You are an out-of-country resident and have a status check on your LAO application/certificate; or
  • You are a Hague Convention applicant and you are outside on Ontario and are seeking the return of a child that has been brought to Ontario
  1. A representative will transfer your application to the Non-Resident Reciprocity Department (NRRD) for processing.
  2. The LAO representative will tell you to provide the following information to the NRRD when you are contacted:
    • Your name, date of birth and contact information
    • A copy of any court documents, orders or materials relevant to the proceedings
    • A summary of the legal matter
    • A description of what you wish to accomplish
  • If you are a Hague Convention applicant and you are inside Canada and are seeking the return of a child removed from Canada (where the child normally lives)
  1. A representative will refer you to the Summary Legal Advice Family (SLAF) or the Family Law Information Centre (FLIC), and will provide you with the appropriate contact information.
