Legal clinic executive director

Landlord’s Self-Help Centre (LSHC)

Landlord’s Self-Help Centre (LSHC) is a Legal Aid Ontario funded legal clinic that assists thousands of small landlords across Ontario every year. In addition to clinical services, LSHC serves and promotes the interests of small landlords by developing learning resources and engaging in law reform and community development activities.

LSHC is recruiting an Executive Director to lead the clinic. The Executive Director manages all aspects of clinic operations and staff to ensure the continued delivery of high-quality legal services to small-scale landlords in Ontario.

The clinic is located in downtown Toronto but is currently operating on a hybrid virtual/in-person model for staff and clients.

Key areas of responsibility of the Executive Director include:

  • Service Delivery and Operations

    • Ensure delivery of clinic services and programs, including casework, community development and outreach, public legal education initiatives and law reform activities
    • Sustain the LSHC membership program
    • Maintain stakeholder relations, including with the small landlord community, Legal Aid Ontario, government and elected officials, community partners and other legal clinics and clinic associations
  • Financial Management

    • Develop annual budgets based on strategic plan priorities
    • Monitor all finances, budgets and financial controls
    • Financial reporting to the board of directors and Legal Aid Ontario
    • Work with external auditors on the annual financial audit
  • Human Resources Management and Administration

    • Recruit, hire and supervise clinic staff (currently four full-time paralegals)
    • Promote staff education, development, engagement and workplace culture
    • Organizational policy development and review
    • Manage facilities, including office space co-located with other legal clinics
  • Strategy and Governance

    • Prepare materials for and attend all board and board committee meetings
    • Report on clinic activities to the board
    • Propose clinic strategy, goals and objectives to the board
    • Complete annual applications and reporting to Legal Aid Ontario
    • Identify emerging risks and monitor compliance with legal requirements
    • Identify and pursue funding and revenue growth opportunities

Qualifications and experience

The ideal candidate will demonstrate the following:

  • At least five years of previous management experience as executive director or a member of senior management a similar organization
  • Understanding of landlord and tenant law and policy
  • Familiarity with the Legal Aid Ontario framework for legal clinics
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize and delegate
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including, speaking, listening and writing
  • LSO licensed lawyers or paralegals preferred
  • French language skills are an asset

Compensation and benefits:

  • Salary range $90,000 – $110,000/annum
  • Group Health and Dental Benefits
  • RRSP plan
