Published: September 25, 2024
LAO’s President and CEO, David Field, will be retiring after eight successful years leading the organization.
“Over my years at LAO, I have been continually impressed and inspired by the dedication and commitment of our staff, roster members and clinic staff. It has been an honour to lead this organization in fulfilling our mandate to provide legal aid services to low income Ontarians and promote access to justice,” said David.
David spearheaded LAO’s 2019-2024 Strategic Plan and led the organization though several significant changes, including the COVID-19 pandemic. He led increases to LAO’s compensation rates for private bar lawyers and the transition of LAO’s staff to a defined benefit pension to better attract and retain quality service providers and staff.
David is retiring after a 42 year career in public service, including extensive experience working within the Ministry of the Attorney General, as well as the Justice Branch at the Management Board Secretariat. He also held the role of Vice President, Strategic Planning and Compliance at LAO prior to commencing as President and CEO.
“My time at LAO has been the most rewarding and fulfilling part of my 42 year career in public service. While I am now looking forward to pursuing other passions and projects, I do so knowing the organization is on a strong foundation.”
LAO Board Chair Steve Pengelly said “On behalf of LAO’s Board of Directors, I would like to thank David for his leadership and recognize his significant contributions to Legal Aid Ontario over the past years. We commend David’s commitment and client-centered focus and wish him well in retirement”.
David’s last day will be October 11, 2024. Janet Budgell, LAO’s VP General Counsel & Compliance, will act as President and CEO while the recruitment of a new President and CEO takes place.
