Legal Assistance of Windsor and Community Legal Aid celebrate their new co-location
Published: June 23, 2016
Legal Aid Ontario (LAO) congratulates Legal Assistance of Windsor (LAW)-a unique, interdisciplinary legal clinic, and Community Legal Aid (CLA), the University of Windsor SLASS clinic, in the celebration of their co-location in downtown Windsor. The clinics provide local low-income and vulnerable people with one-stop coordinated, holistic services from lawyers and social workers.
The co-located clinics, combine the services of CLA and LAW, and are supported by Legal Aid along with the University of Windsor and its Faculty of Law. They will provide clients with individual client representation, community development projects and community initiatives. An Aboriginal Justice Coordinator on staff will help support the region’s Aboriginal community.
“This partnership between LAO and the University of Windsor is very important to us,” says David Field, LAO’s CEO and President. “The University of Windsor’s examples of cross-disciplinary and mentorship programs are exceptional, and this union represents one of the many innovative ways that students learn and experience law.”
“Being in one accessible downtown location will streamline services to the community,” adds clinic director Marion Overholt. “It means that an individual will now be able to access a variety of legal and social work services at one accessible downtown location. Our students and staff have experienced incredible opportunities to collaborate as a result of the colocation.”
