LAO receives report from Deloitte
Published: May 9, 2017
On behalf of Legal Aid Ontario, I have received the independent review performed by Deloitte for the Ministry of the Attorney General.
Over the past four months Deloitte thoroughly examined LAO’s work and interviewed staff and stakeholders. Their review of our work affirmed the feasibility of LAO’s balanced budget plan while offering recommendations for LAO to consider.
I am very grateful to the provincial government for their ongoing and generous support, and for their commitment that all Ontarians have access to justice. More low-income Ontarians than ever have received legal help through the unprecedented investment of the Province. We will be working hard to implement our balanced budget plan so that we can continue to serve more clients.
We are continuously striving to improve as an organization. I welcome the review’s recommendations in this regard. Over the next several months, the executive and management of LAO and myself will be working with our staff to implement these recommendations. At this time, I would like to affirm LAO’s commitment to continuing to provide vital legal services to our clients while moving toward a balanced budget by 2019 and demonstrating transparency as a key pillar of our work.
Providing support to as many vulnerable Ontarians as possible is of the utmost importance to us at LAO. We have limited resources which requires difficult choices, but client service continues to be our highest priority. This review reflects confidence in LAO’s capacity to meet challenges, and provides concrete recommendations for future planning. Ultimately, LAO’s vision remains the same: ensuring low-income Ontarians have access to justice.

Last year, Legal Aid Ontario helped over 840,000 low income Ontarians who would not otherwise have had assistance in court with a criminal, family or refugee matter. We are grateful to the Ministry of the Attorney General and Deloitte for their feedback on our balanced budget plan and on how we can improve the important work we do providing legal services to those most in need.
