Director, Legal Services
Mississauga Community Legal Services is a community legal clinic funded by Legal Aid Ontario. We provide legal advice and representation to low-income residents of the City of Mississauga in various areas of law. We focus our work in the areas of housing and homelessness, immigration law, workers’ rights, income security, violence and health, in conjunction with community development and organizing work to address systemic issues of social exclusion, displacement and poverty.
The clinic is seeking an experienced Senior Counsel to join our team on a permanent basis.
The candidate will be part of the management team responsible for managing the direct legal services of the clinic, overseeing a team of lawyers and community legal workers. The Director, Legal Services will provide legal expertise in more than one or all the areas of law including Immigration, Employment or Human Rights, litigate matters in Ontario Tribunals and Courts, the Federal Courts, and be able to take on test cases to the Supreme Court of Canada.
The successful candidate will focus on establishing and building relationships with external community partners and stakeholders through community initiatives. This role will also seek out opportunities to engage in test cases to contribute to systemic law reform changes. Qualifications include:
- 8 years + legal experience at higher court level
- 3 years + management experience with strong leadership;
- Member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario;
- Experience advising and supporting a team, guiding and developing skills.
- Demonstrated ability to successfully work on multiple projects and priorities within established timelines;
- Experience providing services in a community legal clinic setting is highly desirable;
- Ability to communicate in both official languages is an asset.
The salary range is $111,923 -$146,034 commensurate with level of experience along with a comprehensive health and dental benefits, four weeks of vacation and a defined pension plan with the Colleges of Applied Arts and Technologies Pension Plan (CAAT).
