Articling student (2024-2025)

South Asian Legal Clinic of Ontario (SALCO) | Articling Position (10 Months) – 2024-2025

The South Asian Legal Clinic of Ontario (SALCO) is a community legal clinic funded by Legal Aid Ontario (LAO). We provide legal advice and representation to low-income South Asians in Ontario in a number of areas of law. We also do a significant amount of law reform work on issues including trafficking, forced marriage, race/religious discrimination, anti-racism, police profiling, and family violence (elder abuse, intimate partner violence). That work includes test case work, advocacy with governments, community development, and public legal education. Please check out our website for more detail: https://salc.on.ca.

SALCO is seeking an articling student for 2024-2024. Applicants must be available to start as soon as July 8, 2024 and be eligible to undertake articles in Ontario. SALCO currently has a hybrid work model in place with work from home and in office. The articling student will have a broad range of experiences while articling with SALCO including casework, law reform work, and public legal education. Articling will include assisting SALCO lawyers, handling your own caseload (with potential to take on tribunal hearings), creating and conducting public legal education, and participating in law reform and community development projects at the clinic.

Salary for 10 months will be $58,695 with 10 days of vacation. SALCO is not able to pay any other fees associated with articling (ex: LSO fees).

Assets:

  • Ability to speak a second South Asian language including Bengali and/or Tamil is an asset (please note any second South Asian language in your CV)
  • Excellent research, writing and communication skills
  • Experience working with low-income communities
  • Experience working with diverse members of the South Asian community
  • Demonstrated knowledge of social justice and systemic barriers to the South Asian community/ Understanding of issues of significance to the low-income South Asian community;
  • Demonstrated initiative and resourcefulness; and
  • Excellent computer skills and good knowledge of social media
