Are you looking for an articling position for 2024/2025? The Community Advocacy & Legal Centre (CALC) is offering an immediate opportunity for interesting and fulfilling work. CALC is a non-profit community legal clinic that helps people living on a low income in Hastings, Prince Edward, and Lennox & Addington counties and Tyendinaga Mohawk Territory with their legal problems from our main office in Belleville, Ontario.
CALC serves clients living on a low income through legal services in a number of areas of law including Tenant Rights, Social Assistance, Worker’s Rights, and Consumer Law. Developing public legal education materials and workshops, collaborating with community partners, and undertaking systemic advocacy are also critical components of our work.
The Articling Student will work under the direction and mentorship of the clinic lawyers to undertake the full range of legal casework related to social assistance and tenant rights matters, including representing clients before Tribunals. The Articling Student will also participate in community development work, such as law reform and public legal education, with a specific focus on outreach with the Indigenous community.
Applicants shall:
- Have a demonstrated commitment to social justice issues, and an appreciation for the community lawyering approach. Previous legal clinic experience is an asset.
- Excellent writing and communication skills.
- Ability to do emotionally charged work, including being comfortable having difficult conversations with people experiencing challenging or traumatic situations.
- Have strong organizational skills, and capacity to work in a fast-paced setting with multiple priorities.
- Have an awareness of issues particular to low income clients in rural communities.
This position requires daily in-person attendance at our Belleville office. A valid driver’s license and vehicle is a significant asset, as we serve a large geographic area with minimal or no public transportation.
This is a 10-month articling position to begin as soon as possible. The salary is $60,000 for the 10-month period.
