Employment Law Staff Lawyer
Contract – Full Time
Rexdale Community Legal Clinic, West Toronto Community Legal Services and South Etobicoke Community Legal Services are community legal clinics serving the legal needs of people living on low incomes in their respective communities. They have partnered to improve legal services across all three of their catchment areas through the West End Service Enhancement (WESE) project.
We are seeking coverage of our employment law practice with a short-term, full time contract. The contract would start as soon as possible and end on August 9, 2024. The lawyer will be expected to provide advice, brief services and representation for a wide breadth of employment law matters in Toronto’s west end. The lawyer will also be actively involved in public legal education, law reform, and community development initiatives.
Applicants should have the following qualifications:
- Lawyer member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario;
- Demonstrated experience in employment law, with a strong preference for 2-3 years’ employment law experience;
- Experience providing advice and/or representation and/or enforcement of workers’ rights, in the areas of wrongful dismissal, Employment Insurance, Employment Standards Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, the Ontario Human Rights Code, and Workplace Safety and Insurance Board matters, preferably in a legal clinic environment;
- Appearances before the Ontario Labour Relations Board, Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario, Social Security Tribunal and Small Claims Court are an asset;
- Experience leading or contributing to law reform and community development initiatives is an asset;
- Effective research and oral and written advocacy skills;
- Strong interest in social justice;
- Ability to work with minimal administrative support;
- Ability to manage a high caseload independently;
- The successful candidate must be able to travel to all three clinic locations, as required
Prorated salary range of $74,225 to $84,048 is based upon year of call.
