This is a full time permanent position at our main office in Kapuskasing.
Minimum Qualifications and Experience:
- LL.B/J.D. called to the Bar in Ontario
- Member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario
- Relevant experience in law, specifically related to clinic services
- Managerial and administrative experience and skills
- Experience supervising legal work
- Experience with volunteer boards and ability to work with board members
- Strong organizational skills, ability to prioritize and delegate
- Familiarity with the Legal Aid Ontario framework for legal clinics
- Fully bilingual (French and English)
Position Summary:
The Executive Director (ED) is responsible for the day-to-day management of the clinic, ensuring the quality and integrity of services delivered. The ED supervises clinic staff, manages daily operations and works to develop the clinic’s mandate in the community. This role involves legal casework, community services, personnel management and extensive communication with various stakeholders.
Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Legal
- Ensure delivery of clinic services and programs, including casework, community development and outreach, public legal education initiatives and law reform activities
- Interview clients, prepare documentation, conduct negotiations and provide advice and representation in French and English
- Supervise community legal workers
- Maintain high-quality legal services through regular review of clinic activities
- Establish expertise in poverty law areas
- Travel to courts, tribunals and satellite offices as required
Administration
- Develop annual budgets based on strategic plan priorities
- Monitor all finances, budgets and financial controls
- Financial reporting to the Board of Directors and Legal Aid Ontario
- Work with external auditors on the annual financial audit
- Recruit, hire and supervise clinic staff
- Promote staff education, development, engagement and workplace culture
- Policy development and review
- Manage facilities, including satellite offices
- Prepare materials for and attend all board and board committee meetings
- Report on clinic activities to the board
- Propose clinic strategy, goals and objectives to the board
- Complete annual application and reporting to Legal Aid Ontario
- Identify emerging risks and monitor compliance with legal requirements
- Identify and pursue funding and revenue growth opportunities
The salary range for this position is $120,000 – $149,000. Compensation considers experience and includes a benefits package.
