LAO to consult on implementation date change for youth criminal and criminal mental health requirements
Legal Aid Ontario (LAO) is consulting on a new implementation date of Jan. 1, 2024, for two new areas of law—youth criminal and criminal mental health matters.
Under the Legal Aid Services Rules, the effective date was originally June 1, 2023.
The new date will allow for more time to address the operational impacts of launching minimum requirements and authorizations in these areas of law.
The new date will also align with roster members reporting through LAO’s annual Lawyer Self-Report, which will simplify administrative processes for lawyers.
As per section 46 of the Legal Aid Services Act, 2020, LAO is required to post a proposed Rule change on its website for public feedback.
If you wish to participate, please provide written feedback on the proposed date change during the consultation period, taking place from April 17, 2023 to May 17, 2023. All related materials are posted on LAO’s consultation webpage.
