What is an LAO settlement conference?
An LAO settlement conference is a meeting where you and the other party (such as your ex-partner) can try to work out an agreement with help from a neutral legal professional called a facilitator. It is a way to resolve issues such as decision-making responsibility (custody), parenting time (access), child or spousal support and property – without the stress and cost of going to court. LAO provides experienced facilitators for the settlement conference without charging a fee to the parties.
The person leading the LAO settlement conference is an experienced family lawyer who helps guide the conversation and keep it respectful and focused. Most conferences happen online, so you do not have to travel, and they are free for eligible Legal Aid Ontario (LAO) clients.
LAO settlement conferences are private, voluntary and can happen at any stage of your legal matter. If there are safety concerns (such as domestic violence or high conflict), the process can be stopped at any time. Both parties need to be represented by a lawyer. If you have a legal aid certificate, your lawyer’s preparation time and attendance at the LAO settlement conference will be covered.
If you are dealing with a family law issue and want to explore a different way to resolve it, talk to your lawyer. Your lawyer can help you decide if an LAO settlement conference is right for you and can submit a request to LAO if appropriate.s
