Service Finder FAQ

What is Service Finder?

Service Finder is an online tool that helps people find the right legal services based on their needs. It guides users through a few questions (about their income and the type of legal issue they have, for instance) and refers them to the appropriate services and service providers (i.e., offices, clinics or agencies).

Where can I find the Service Finder tool?

Service Finder will be available on the Legal Aid Ontario (LAO) website: https://www.legalaid.on.ca/.

Who can use the Service Finder tool, and where can I find it?

The Service Finder tool is used by individuals seeking legal services and support, and by professionals assisting clients. It can be accessed through the Legal Aid Ontario (LAO) website (https://www.legalaid.on.ca/). Our contact centre staff also use Service Finder to connect clients to other services.

Why is my agency information listed? What are the criteria for a listing to be promoted on Service Finder?

Agencies are listed if they offer legal services or support, including:

  • representation
  • legal advice
  • general legal information
  • document preparation (e.g., court workers)

These services must relate to areas such as:

  • criminal law
  • family law
  • child protection
  • immigration and refugee law
  • housing
  • income assistance
  • mental health
  • employment and workplace issues
  • human rights and discrimination
  • power of attorney and wills

What information about my agency is displayed?

The Service Finder tool provides essential information about each agency, including:

  • the type of legal services offered
  • contact details (including full address, phone number, fax, email and website)
  • hours of operation
  • areas of specialization
  • availability of support in specific legal areas
  • language services
  • accessibility services

How often is the Service Finder tool updated with service provider listings?

The Service Finder tool is updated twice a year by the Knowledge and Information Management (KIM) team.

Updates are triggered by three key events:

  • Bi-annual research: LAO will review online information to ensure accuracy.
  • User feedback: If users report errors or discrepancies through the tool’s feedback option or the contact centre, an LAO team will investigate and update as necessary.
  • Direct updates from service providers: Providers can update their information by emailing kim@lao.on.ca.

How can I add or remove my agency from the tool?

To add or remove a service provider (agency or organization), please email kim@lao.on.ca. Updates are made in real-time and can appear or be removed instantly on the Service Finder tool.

Who can I contact for more information?

For any inquiries or assistance related to the Service Finder tool, please contact the KIM team at kim@lao.on.ca.

We value your feedback and are committed to providing up-to-date, accurate information.
