Indigenous Services action plan celebrates achievements and progress

As the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation approaches, the Indigenous Services Department at Legal Aid Ontario (LAO) is reporting significant progress in the first year since it implemented a bold action plan to strengthen its services.
The Year One Report of LAO’s Indigenous Services Action Plan highlights the collective efforts of staff, leadership and partners across Legal Aid Ontario to enhance services for First Nations, Inuit and Métis clients and advance LAO’s commitment to reconciliation through meaningful action.
Report highlights: Client-centred services for Indigenous clients
- Launched a two-year initiative to educate lawyers and law students on key legislation impacting Indigenous children and families.
- Strengthened collaboration and reporting with LAO-funded Indigenous legal services organizations.
- Renewed funding agreements with various Indigenous organizations to support or expand legal services, including those for child protection.
- Focused on continued training and education of staff lawyers and duty counsel.
- Supported a review of Gladue Roster resources and requirements.
- Collaborated on the implementation of Indigenous Peoples Courts in various Ontario communities.
- Connected with Indigenous justice coordinators and districts across the province to build meaningful relationships with Indigenous communities, clients and court support staff.
