Clinic License Paralegal

The Durham Community Legal Clinic (DCLC) is a not-for-profit community based legal clinic funded by Legal Aid Ontario. The Clinic promotes universal access to justice and the elimination of poverty through legal representation, summary advice, referrals, public legal education and information and community development. The Clinic delivers high quality services reflecting our commitment to respect, fairness, equality and empowerment.

Primary Duties include:

  1. Manage casework, represent clients before administrative tribunals.
  2. Provide summary advice and brief services to clients both by in person and over the phone.
  3. Represent Clinic in administrative Tribunal proceedings.
  4. Assist with providing public legal education materials and outreach initiatives.
  5. Conduct public legal education workshops.
  6. Providing ongoing TDC assistance with scheduled and unscheduled clients.
  7. Draft legal memos.
  8. Assist with the development and support of Clinic advocacy / justice reform initiatives.
  9. Contribute to task related to Clinic operations as required.

Qualifications and Experience:

  1. Paralegal with Law Society of Ontario license in good standing.
  2. Familiarity with legal clinic areas of law.
  3. Excellent research, writing and advocacy skills.
  4. Excellent analytical, organizational and time management skills.
  5. Exemplary written and oral communication skills.
  6. Capacity to understand complex legal concepts.
  7. Experienced advocacy in Ontario tribunals.
  8. A demonstrated commitment to social justice and working for change for vulnerable and marginalized groups.
  9. Ability to work as part of a team in a busy, demanding environment.
  10. Community legal clinic experience or other related legal experience would be assets.

  • DCLC strives to promote a safe and welcoming work environment
  • Typical Office setting
  • Normal operations include (but not limited to) filing, photocopying, answering phones, computer work, video conferencing, face to face interactions with the public (note: clients may at times present confrontational situations).

Compensation
$63,375.38 plus health and dental benefits.

This is a 12 month contract position

In addition to review of qualifications, interviews and reference checks, successful candidates may be invited to participate in a written test and other assessment tools.
