Advocacy Centre for Tenants Ontario (ACTO)

The Advocacy Centre for Tenants Ontario (ACTO) is a community legal clinic with a provincial mandate to advance human rights and justice in housing for low-income Ontarians through legal advice & representation, law reform, community organizing, training and education.

We are seeking an experienced and dynamic lawyer to fill a central position with our organization located in downtown Toronto. In this role, the successful candidate will be responsible for test case and appellate litigation. Working with a strong advocacy team, the staff lawyer will also participate in law reform, housing policy and legal education projects to advance the rights of low-income tenants.

The ideal candidate is a self-starter motivated by an opportunity to affect change through public interest litigation.

The candidate must:

• Be a member of the Law Society of Ontario in good standing.
• Have a minimum of 3 years experience in appellate litigation
• Have experience in housing, human rights law or other related public interest advocacy
• Have the ability to effectively present complex legal issues to a variety of audiences
• Have demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team.
• Experience working for a non-profit organization and the ability to communicate in both official languages are assets in applying for this position.

This is a full time position with generous benefits including 4 weeks vacation, group health benefits and pension. The salary range is $85,000 to $98,000, commensurate with experience. ACTO is a hybrid workplace.
