Intake Worker

Legal Assistance of Windsor (LAW) is seeking a permanent, full-time Intake Worker, with a start date on or after April 29, 2024.

About LAW

LAW is an interdisciplinary community legal clinic combining legal and social work professions to meet the multi-faceted needs of the low-income community in Windsor and Essex County. We strive to be an inclusive organization committed to fostering diversity in every aspect of our work, including hiring.

About the Position

The intake worker Responsible for client intake, including:

  • Assessment of the client’s needs to determine the appropriate service for the client, including the early identification of vulnerable clients so the appropriate service and referrals can be made, under the supervision of staff lawyers and staff social workers
  • Complete summary advice and referral documentation
  • Assessing and directing clients to appropriate resources
  • Prepare and review letters, forms, reports, court forms, pleadings and/or other documents with accuracy
  • Schedule appointments

Administration/Organizational Competencies include:

  • General knowledge of office procedures, standard office equipment, and administrative procedures
  • An awareness of trauma-informed practice and an understanding of the principles of intersectionality and anti-oppression
  • Ability to handle many tasks at once, often with interruption
  • Ability to work quickly and accurately in a fast paced environment
  • Aptitude and willingness to work effectively with vulnerable clients, particularly clients with mental health issues and survivors of domestic abuse
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and interview skills and sound judgment for dealing with clients, lawyers, social workers, students and other agencies
  • Excellent spelling and grammar skills, including accurate word processing and data entry skills with attention to detail
  • Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail
  • Proven ability to learn and adapt to new or modified policies and procedures
  • Experience with legal files would be an asset

Computer/IT Processes:

  • Intermediate computer skill;
  • Knowledge of, and experience using Office 2010 (Outlook, Word and Excel)
  • An aptitude to learn other programs/software as required;
  • Demonstrated ability to use latest communication and computing technologies with an aptitude to learn other programs/software as required

Job Benefits

  • Annual salary between $58,000 and $63,000, commensurate with experience.
  • Employer-funded RRSP contributions.
  • Healthcare benefits program after a 3-month probationary period.
  • Vacation entitlements start at 3 weeks per year and increase with seniority.
