Staff Lawyer – Litigation Specialist
The HIV & AIDS Legal Clinic Ontario (HALCO) is a community legal clinic serving the legal needs of people living with HIV in Ontario. HALCO staff provide legal advice and representation, and engage in public legal education, law reform and community development activities. The clinic is seeking a lawyer to provide litigation and clinic law services. The person will be able to split their time between working in the office and working remotely (precise schedule to be determined).

Responsibilities
The Litigation Specialist provides advice and representation to people living with HIV across Ontario, primarily in litigation matters before courts and tribunals involving human rights, privacy, health law, income maintenance, drug benefits, and Charter issues. The lawyer also leads litigation-related law reform projects, including court and tribunal interventions, and consults with other HALCO lawyers on litigation-related matters. HALCO regularly intervenes in cases before appeal courts and the Supreme Court of
Canada. In addition, the lawyer engages in public legal education initiatives and may be asked to provide summary advice in relation to various areas of law.
Required Qualifications
- Membership in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario
- Civil litigation experience (minimum three years)
- Experience working with equity-seeking communities
Preferred Qualifications
- Knowledge of poverty, privacy and human rights law
- Knowledge of HIV-affected communities
- Fluency in French
Compensation: $70,000 – $90,000 (commensurate with experience), employer supported RRSP (5.5% of annual salary), group benefits package, generous vacation and sick benefits
