Clinic Lawyer
Durham Community Legal Clinic (“DCLC”) is a community legal clinic funded by Legal Aid Ontario. DCLC provides free, clinic law services to low income residents in the Durham Region in the areas of housing, employment law, WSIB, human rights and income supports.
DCLC is seeking an experienced Clinic Lawyer (Full-Time permanent) to join our team. Reporting to the Director of Legal Services, the candidate will bring their in-depth clinic experience and expertise in order to assist the Clinic in managing client caseload, particularly in the area of employment law, human rights and WSIB. Participate in the intake procedure, provide legal advice and information, undertake formal and informal advocacy, represent clients before administrative tribunals and courts, participate in community development outreach and law reform projects, and provide public legal education.
Qualifications
- A practicing lawyer licenced by the Law Society of Ontario with 3 to 5 years of experience in legal clinic work
- Extensive experience in human rights, employment law and WSIB
- Ability to mange caseload and meet tight deadlines
- Litigation and tribunal experience
- Proven ability to interact with high needs clients in an empathetic manner
- Excellent customer service, public presentation, communication, research and writing skills
- Professional, ethical, accurate, detailed, team focused
- High degree of computer literacy and administrative self-sufficiency
- Ability to diffuse intense situation and assist people in crisis
- Ability to work collaboratively with staff including lawyers, paralegals, support staff and management.
Special consideration will be given to candidates with
- Knowledge of CIMS software
- Fluency in a second language
In addition to review of qualifications, interviews and reference checks, successful candidates may be invited to participate in a written test and other assessment tools.
Compensation:
$89,173.23 plus a benefit plan and RRSP contributions.
