Dockets
Dockets need to be typed and detailed as to whom, what, and where services were provided. Dockets must be accurate in order to support your billed accounts. Incomplete or vague dockets will slow down the payment processing time, and will cause you to fail a post-payment audit.
The resources below have important tips to ensure that your dockets are in compliance. We’ve even included a docket template for your use.
Note: If your dockets indicate more time than you wish to bill LAO (discounting), please just indicate that on your dockets.
- Dockets, dockets, dockets!: Sample civil and criminal dockets from the Better Billing Bulletin (B3).
- For Speedy Payment, Attach your Dockets!: Tips on attaching dockets from the B3.
Always attach your dockets to your Online accounts. A detailed account and a discretion letter must be attached when you request a discretionary increase. To attach a document, click on the paper clip icon at the bottom of the Online account page; then click on “browse” to find the document you want to attach (e.g. word document, excel file, etc.) and select the document; click upload and the document is attached. A similar process to attach dockets is possible if you use PC Law or other file management applications. Please call the Lawyer Service Centre for help.
Your dockets must contain sufficient detail to allow LAO to determine what work was done on the date docketed. In addition to being a best practice, detailed dockets are necessary for fiscal and client accountability. Below you’ll find a sample detailed docket for civil and criminal accounts. Failure to provide dockets with sufficient detail may result in nonpayment of your accounts. Please ensure dockets are detailed.
