Information for Lawyers

Technical requirements


Before you begin using Legal Aid Online, your computer needs to be configured properly. Most computers are set up using the appropriate default settings, but it’s recommended that you check the following three settings:

  • Browser security: Ensure you have installed the latest security patches and updates for your browser.
  • Cookies enabled: Cookies (a small file created by a server on your computer) must be enabled to use Legal Aid Online.
  • JavaScript enabled: Legal Aid Online includes interactive content that requires JavaScript.

For the best experience, and to ensure the security of Legal Aid Online, it’s recommended that you use Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 or higher, or Firefox 3.0 or higher.

Windows Vista with Internet Explorer 8

  1. Launch Internet Explorer.
  2. From the Safety menu in the upper right, click Delete Browsing History.
  3. Select Temporary Internet files, Cookies, and History check boxes
  4. Click Delete.
  5. To close the Internet Options window, click OK
  6. Close Internet Explorer and re-launch prior to accessing Legal Aid Online

Windows Vista with Internet Explorer 7

  1. Launch Internet Explorer
  2. From the Tools menu, select Internet Options
  3. On the Security tab, highlight the Trusted Sites icon and click Sites
  4. In the text box provided, type https://www.legalaidonline.on.ca and click Add. The address appears in the Websites box
  5. To close the Trusted Sites window, click Close
  6. On the General tab, click Delete
  7. On the Delete Browsing History window, click Delete files
  8. To confirm, click Yes
  9. On the Delete Browsing History window, click Delete cookies
  10. To confirm, click Yes
  11. On the Delete Browsing History window, click Delete history
  12. To confirm, click Yes
  13. To close the Delete Browsing History window, click Close
  14. To close the Internet Options window, click OK
  15. Close Internet Explorer and re-launch prior to accessing Legal Aid Online

Windows XP or older with Internet Explorer 7

  1. Launch Internet Explorer
  2. From the Tools menu, select Internet Options
  3. On the General tab, click Delete
  4. To delete all information (Temporary Internet Files, Cookies, History, Form Data, Passwords), click Delete all
  5. To confirm, click Yes

  1. Click Delete Cookies
  2. To confirm, click Yes
  3. Click Delete Files
  4. To confirm, click Yes
  5. Click Clear History
  6. To confirm, click Yes
  7. To close the Delete Files window, click OK
  8. To close the Internet Options window, click OK
  9. Close Internet Explorer and re-launch prior to accessing Legal Aid Online

Windows XP or older with Internet Explorer 6

  1. Launch Internet Explorer
  2. From the Tools menu, select Internet Options
  3. On the General tab, click Delete Cookies
  4. To confirm, click OK
  5. On the General tab, click Delete Files
  6. Select the Delete all offline content checkbox and click OK
  7. On the General tab, click Clear History
  8. To confirm, click Yes

Configure Browser Security

Security starts with your web browser. Ensure you have installed the latest security patches and updates for your browser.

For all versions of Internet Explorer:

  1. Launch Internet Explorer
  2. From the Tools menu, select Internet Options
  3. On the Advanced tab, in the Settings box, scroll to the Security section and select the Use SSL 2.0 and Use SSL 3.0 check boxes
  4. To save your settings, click OK

Enable cookies

A cookie is a small file created by a web server on your computer that can be referenced when the website is visited or when a page on the site is visited. Cookies cannot access files or other information stored on your computer. Cookies must be enabled to use Legal Aid Online.

To enable cookies in Internet Explorer 7 or 8:

  1. Launch Internet Explorer
  2. Click the Tools button, and then click Internet Options.
  3. Click the Privacy tab, and then, under Settings, move the slider to the middle or bottom to allow some or all cookies (depending on your security preference), and then click OK.

To enable cookies in Internet Explorer 6.0:

  1. Launch Internet Explorer.
  2. From the Tools menu, select Internet Options.
  3. On the Privacy tab, click Advanced.
  4. Select the Override automatic cookie handling check box.
  5. To save your Advanced Privacy settings, click OK.
  6. To close the Internet Options window, click OK.

Enable Javascript

Javascript is a technology that improves the functionality of web pages. Legal Aid Online includes interactive content and requires Javascript to be enabled.

To enable Javascript:

  1. Launch Internet Explorer
  2. From the Tools menu, select Internet Options
  3. On the Security tab, click Custom Level
  4. In the Settings box, scroll to the Scripting section, and select Enable for the following options:
    • Active Scripting
    • Allow paste operations via script
    • Scripting of java applets
  5. To save these settings, click OK
  6. To close the Internet Options window, click OK

You are now ready to sign in to Legal Aid Online!

To clear history, offline files, and cookies:

  1. Launch Firefox
  2. From the Tools menu, select Clear Recent History
  3. Select the items you want to delete (e.g., Browsing & Download History, Cache, Cookies)
  4. Click Clear Now

Configure Browser Security

To configure security:

  1. Launch Mozilla Firefox
  2. From the Tools menu, select Options
  3. On the Advanced tab, select Encryption
  4. On the Encryption tab, select the Use SSL 3.0 check box
  5. To save your settings, click OK

To clear recent history:

  1. Launch Firefox
  2. From the Tools menu, select Clear Recent History
  3. Select the items you want to delete (e.g., Browsing & Download History, Cache, Cookies)
  4. Click Clear Recent History

To clear offline files:

  1. Launch Firefox.
  2. From the Tools menu, select Options
  3. On the Privacy tab, click Clear Private Data
  4. Select the Cache check box
  5. Click Clear Private Data Now

To clear cookies:

  1. Launch Firefox.
  2. From the Tools menu, select Options
  3. On the Privacy tab, in the Cookies section, click Show Cookies
  4. In the Cookies dialog box, click Remove All Cookies
  5. To close the Cookies dialog box, click OK
  6. To close the Options window, click OK
