COVID-19: Update on our client services

We are working with justice partners to ensure the safety of our clients, in our effort against COVID‑19 (coronavirus). We are following advice provided by the Ministry of Health, Chief Medical Officer of Health and Public Health Officials, and we are committed to keeping you informed of any new developments. Please call or check this page for updates on our services before you visit a legal aid office, clinic, our provincial office, or a courthouse.
Applying for legal aid, application status, summary legal advice for criminal or family law matters
Legal Aid Ontario is continuing to provide help, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (EST) Monday to Friday. Interpreter services are available.
Our provincial office and legal aid offices are closed to the public.
Employment and housing help
Important changes are being made to government programs such as employment insurance (EI) and housing rights. Information is changing daily, please check often.

- Call the legal clinic in your catchment area for hours of operation, services, information, and to how to schedule an appointment.
- Visit the Ontario Government and Government of Canada websites for updates.
All in-person legal aid services have stopped until further notice.
Contact us, your lawyer or legal representative for more information. You can also contact the courthouse, board or tribunal. If you don’t have a lawyer and you need criminal or family legal advice, you can now get help over the phone without having to qualify.
Emergency court services
Criminal and family courts are still open but emergency family matters and criminal matters for clients who are in custody will come first. To find out if your matter is urgent, visit the Ontario Court of Justice and the Superior Court of Justice websites or contact your lawyer or legal representative. If you don’t have one, you can now get summary legal advice for your criminal and family matter over the phone without having to qualify.
Refugee and immigration
Refugee and immigration offices are operating by phone only from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday to Friday.

Immigration and Refugee Board
All in-person hearings and mediation until May 4, 2020 have been cancelled until further notice. Detention reviews will continue.

All hearings up to April 3, 2020 have been postponed until after June 1, 2020. Please visit the Ontario Review Board website for updates and information.
Consent and Capacity Board
Hearings are being held by teleconference but some limited matters will be held by video. Further details will be included with your notice of hearing.
