IAVGO Community Legal Clinic

Permanent, full-time position

IAVGO is seeking a lawyer with experience in representing injured workers and interest in working within a community legal clinic as part of a collective team of community organizers, paralegals, community legal workers, lawyers, and administrative staff.

IAVGO is a specialty legal clinic, funded by Legal Aid Ontario, to provide legal services to injured workers throughout Ontario. Our services include legal advice, legal representation, public legal education, law reform advocacy, and community outreach and development. The clinic operates as a collective, where the staff collectively shares in the day-to-day management of the clinic.

IAVGO is a leader in workers’ compensation law. We are committed to building the collective strength and capacity of injured workers and their organizations to improve Ontario’s workers’ compensation system. We also train and supervise law students through our satellite clinic, Advocates for Injured Workers.

IAVGO is committed to helping the most disadvantaged injured workers, especially those who are precariously employed or belong to marginalized communities. We prioritize cases involving migrant workers.

Main duties of the job:

  • Advise and represent injured workers in workers’ compensation and related proceedings
  • Participate in the clinic’s law reform, public legal education, community development and outreach
  • Act as counsel or co-counsel on leading and test cases
  • Support other clinic caseworkers with research and strategic advice
  • Share in supervising our law student satellite clinic
  • Produce reports for policy advocacy and law reform
  • Support a meaningful commitment to equity and diversity in all aspects of our work, including our internal collective operations and our external-facing service provision

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 3 years call to the Ontario Bar
  • Experience representing injured workers, especially before the WSIB and WSIAT
  • Experience working with precariously employed workers and marginalized groups
  • Member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario
  • Experience writing reports for policy advocacy and law reform

We welcome applications from lawyers who have 8 years of lawyering experience or more, and who have experience mentoring junior lawyers and/or students.

Experience working in a community legal clinic or similar setting; knowledge of poverty law issues; experience supervising students; law reform organising and strategic litigation experience, and ability to work in a second language are assets. We specifically welcome applications from Indigenous, Black, and racialized lawyers and lawyers from other equity-seeking groups.

Compensation and benefits:

  • Salary will be commensurate to experience to a maximum of $93,000 gross (plus benefits), for up to a 2005 year of call to the Ontario Bar
  • Group Health and Dental Benefits
  • RRSP contributions (5.5%); (Defined Benefit Pension Plan application pending)
  • Vacation Entitlement (first year, 20 days)
  • Paid Sick Time
  • Additional Paid Days: Easter Monday, International Workers’ Day, Civic Day, Remembrance Day, Holiday Closure (Dec. 24 – Jan. 1).
