1 Year Contract Position–Possibility of Renewal

The Sudbury Community Legal Clinic has a contract position available immediately for a lawyer who is fluently bilingual in French and English to provide advice and representation primarily in French.

The Sudbury Community Legal Clinic is host to the Northern French Legal Advice Line program funded by Legal Aid Ontario to ensure Francophones in Northern and some parts of Central Ontario have access to legal advice and representation in French in the areas of law covered by community legal clinics.

This is a one year contract with the possibility of renewal subject to continued funding from Legal Aid Ontario.

The French Legal Advice Line Lawyer will:

  • Provide summary legal advice, brief services and representation over the telephone and in person to low-income Ontarians, in the areas of social assistance (ODSP/OW), Canada Pension Plan, Old Age Security, Employment Insurance, housing (tenants only), employment law (workers only)
  • Conduct outreach to francophone organizations in areas of Northern Ontario and some parts of Central Ontario where the local community legal clinic does not have French language capacity
  • Collaborate with other community legal clinics that do not provide French services in the representation of clients in French and the preparation of legal materials in French
  • Engage in law reform and public legal education with francophone communities in the project’s catchment areas.

Qualifications include:

  • Member in good standing of the Law Society of Ontario
  • Advanced written and oral skills in French and English—candidates must agree to language testing, if requested
  • Relevant experience and advocacy skills
  • Advanced computer skills would be an important asset
  • Excellent judgment and problem-solving ability
  • Community legal clinic experience would be an asset

Salary depends on year of call and relevant experience.
