Mississauga Community Legal Services

Mississauga Community Legal Services is a community legal clinic funded by
Legal Aid Ontario. We provide legal advice and representation to low‑income residents of the City of Mississauga in various areas of law including Social Assistance, Tenants Rights, Immigration, Employment, CPP‑D, and Worker’s Compensation.

The clinic is seeking a lawyer to join our team for at least one year. This position replaces a permanent staff lawyer position. The term for this position is subject to clinic funding as well as amendments to Legal Aid Ontario’s directive, the position may have an opportunity to be long‑term.

The candidate will provide legal services in at least two areas of clinic practice, they will represent clients in various Tribunals/Courts, they will offer public legal information sessions to the community, lead and/or support community and law reform initiatives.

The successful candidate will be an important part of the team with a strong commitment towards litigation, community development, and law reform as a means to affect change to improve the lives of Mississauga residents
experiencing low incomes.

Qualifications Include:

  • Employment law, Tenancy law and/or Social Assistance experience is preferred;
  • Ability to manage a high caseload;
  • Experience leading or contributing to a law reform or community development initiative;
  • Excellent oral and written advocacy skills;
  • Commitment to social justice and broader poverty law issues;
  • Member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario;
  • Ability to regularly attend off-site satellite clinic locations;
  • Ability to provide legal services to Franco-Ontarians is an asset;
  • Ability to speak a second language is an asset;
  • At least three years of experience providing legal services in a community legal clinic is an asset.

The candidate’s salary and benefits will be commensurate with level of experience in accordance with the Legal Aid Ontario funding grid.
