Durham Community Legal Clinic celebrates 30 years of serving low-income clients

Friday, October 16, 2015

Legal Aid Ontario congratulates the Durham Community Legal Clinic for their 30-year legacy of service to their community. From its humble beginnings as a tenant hotline staffed by volunteers, the clinic now offers 12 full-time staff to assist clients in a wide range of legal services.

Recently, the clinic relocated to 111 Simcoe St. North, and will soon open two satellite offices one in Ajax and another in Uxbridge.

Executive Director Deborah Hastings has seen considerable progress and many changes over the past 15 years. Our clinic has expanded to not just include housing, but also public legal education, income protection, disability issues and other areas of law faced by the vulnerable residents of Durham Region.

Over the past 15 years, the area population has burgeoned in both size and diversity of needs. The Durham Community Legal Clinic rose to the challenge of maintaining their high standard of service as their client roster increased dramatically.

Im particularly grateful to our clinic staff for their overwhelming dedication in serving our low-income clients, says Hastings. I think that having staff here long-term, working as a team, is why we have been able to successfully help our clients. Were also appreciative that Legal Aid Ontario has recognized us for our contributions in our community through additional funding.

To facilitate greater access to services, the clinic has developed key partnerships with numerous organizations in its region. Partnering with many community agencies through forums as well as educating local agencies on the legal issues of clients has created a strong support network for clients throughout the region.
