LAO and St Clair College partner to provide forms assistance service

Posted on: Monday, February 14, 2011

Legal Aid Ontario (LAO) has formed an innovative partnership with the St Clair College Paralegal Program to provide free forms assistance to Windsor-area residents. The service, which opened at LAO’s Essex-Lambton-Kent District office January 18th, offers clients one-on-one assistance with completing a range of documents, from Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP) forms to license applications. The program is staffed by first and second-year paralegal students, who gain course credits and practical experience dealing with clients.

The forms assistance service was established by St Clair College in January 2010 and has since expanded to several locations across Windsor, including the Windsor-Essex Bilingual Legal Clinic. Launching the service at the Essex-Lambton-Kent District office this month will provide an additional location for clients to get assistance with forms and processes that they are not familiar with.

The forms assistance service is available on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. and 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. at LAO and from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. at several other locations in Windsor. For service in languages other than English, clients should bring an interpreter.

“At St Clair College we are pleased to work with Legal Aid Ontario to help more Windsor-area clients get the assistance that they need. Our students are afforded a great opportunity to get involved in the community, and our clients become better informed before taking the next steps to resolve their matter. “
- Elizabeth MacLeod, St Clair College Professor and Paralegal Program Coordinator

“LAO’s partnership with St Clair College allows us to provide enhanced service to Windsor-area clients. Many of our clients need extra assistance with filling out paperwork and the paralegal students really help to meet that need.”
- Mary-Anne Stevens, District Area Director, Essex, Lambton and Kent District, Legal Aid Ontario
