Legal Aid Ontario recognized for helping immigrant victims of domestic violence

Immigrant Women Services Ottawa (IWSO) is recognizing Legal Aid Ontario’s Integrated Legal Service Office (ILSO) with a community leader award to be presented at the Roses & Candles Gala on November 26. ILSO and its predecessor, the Family Law Office, have worked with IWSO since 1999 to assist vulnerable immigrant women and their children.
“Legal Aid has an understanding of violence against women and children and has made an extraordinary effort to help,” says IWSO Manager, Crisis & Counseling services Vivian Chan-Brouillette. “As a result, their work has had significant impact on this problem in the Ottawa community. For example, an abuser can lie to the victim about their rights or threaten to send them back home without the children. If these women don’t see a lawyer and learn about their rights, they may not even have the courage to think about leaving their abuser.”
The community leader award will be accepted by LAO’s George MacPherson, Manager of Legal Services, Eastern Region, at an upcoming gala on November 26.
“On behalf of the extremely dedicated and hardworking team at ILSO and Legal Aid Ontario, I’m very happy to accept this award,” says MacPherson. “We’re proud to be a part of this effort as immigrant women who are subject to domestic violence are one of our most vulnerable client groups. Our legal team and IWSO’s translators work well together to open a door of hope for these women, informing them about the refugee or immigration process as well as family law issues such as separation and custody. We help them to navigate our legal system.”
The Roses and Candles Gala fundraising event is open to the public. It will be held on November 26, 2015 from 6 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Ottawa Conference and Event Centre. This event is in its 16th year and is timed to run during the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Violence, an international United Nations’ initiative.
