Apply now for new Provincial Fund to Expand Clinic Law Services

Wednesday, October 28, 2015

Ontario’s legal aid clinics and student legal aid services societies can now apply for additional permanent funding, starting with 2015/16 funding, through Legal Aid Ontario (LAO)’s new $3.3 million Provincial Fund to Expand Clinic Law Services.

Clinics approved for this new ongoing base funding will receive it in addition to their annual core funding, to help them serve more clients, improve access to justice and client services, and build systemic capacity. Allocations will be distributed by March 31, 2016.

The money comes from the provincial government’s significant, multi-year investment in LAO to expand legal aid services and financial eligibility for low-income Ontarians. LAO’s financial eligibility expansion strategy includes a far-reaching, long-term plan to invest resources in clinic law services.

Eligibility criteria

Eligible services in areas of unmet client need may include either new client services or an expansion of existing client services, to fund representation, legal advice and assistance, public legal education and information and/or systemic advocacy. Preference will be given to eligible, LAO-approved permanent initiatives that provide direct client service.

Collaborative clinic law initiatives, including joint proposals from several clinics/SLASS or proposals by one or more clinics in conjunction with non-clinic community partners and/or LAO service providers are also eligible.

LAO will also consider exceptional proposals to support time-limited projects or other initiatives, consistent with the objective of expanding clinic law services.
