Legal Clinic of Guelph and Wellington County officially opens in Guelph’s medical/legal hub

Friday, June 26, 2015

On June 26, the Legal Clinic of Guelph and Wellington County officially opened as a partner in the legal/medical hub in the Guelph Community Health Centre. The celebration welcomed community members and guests Guelph MPP and Minister of Education Liz Sandals, MP Frank Valeriote, MPP Ted Arnott, Mayor Cam Gutherie, Warden George Bridge and Janet Budgell, vice president, southwest region at Legal Aid Ontario (LAO). Minister Sandals gave opening greetings.

The Legal Clinic, funded by LAO, partners with Guelph Midwives, Sanguen Health Centre and Diabetes Care Guelph at the Guelph Community Health Centre (CHC).

Each organization operates independently, but provides client referrals and collaborates on events and programs for mutual clients. The legal clinic’s role is to help low-income clients with housing and income maintenance. It also provides information and referrals for other areas of law including human rights, employment insurance and consumer issues.

“The Legal Clinic and the Guelph Community Health Centre share a deep commitment to serving the same population and advocating for social changes through education and empowerment,” says Anthea Millikin, executive director of the Legal Clinic of Guelph and Wellington County. “We’re very pleased to be able to offer our shared clients holistic, wrap-around support services in this new space.”

“By partnering together, we can work to reduce and eliminate the barriers to health and wellness that our clients face,” adds David Thornley, executive director of the Guelph CHC. “That means our clients can count on getting access to comprehensive support for many of their day-to-day issues within one space.”

“This hub delivers legal and medical services that provide a lifeline for the low-income residents in this community,” says Janet Budgell. “In addition, it will provide a multitude of services to clients through the partner organizations’ resource sharing and cross-program referrals. Legal Aid Ontario is very pleased to support this vital community resource.”
