LAO partners with York Region legal clinic to offer family and immigration services

Starting Oct. 23, 2014, Legal Aid Ontario (LAO) will be offering family law and immigration services at the Community Legal Clinic of York Region. Under this partnership, clients will be able to access:

  • consultations, summary advice and referrals for family matters such as separation, child custody, access, support and child protection matters
  • two-hour consultations for domestic violence victims with a LAO family law staff lawyer at the legal clinic
  • referrals to mediation services for separating couples
  • summary advice, referrals and brief service for immigration matters

Partnerships such as this are just one way in which LAO is working with community legal clinics to expand access to legal services for low-income clients, says John McCamus, Chair of LAO. We look forward to working alongside the Community Legal Clinic of York Region to offer both family and immigration legal services.

Provincial funding

This partnership with the Community Legal Clinic of York Region is one of a number of programs that LAO is developing with the additional provincial funding of $30 million over a four year period. LAOs family law strategy aims to reduce the number of unrepresented family litigants, provide an avenue for consensual dispute resolution, expand the early resolution service sector and provide holistic and integrated services.
