Intake changes to refugee staff services

Tuesday, March 18, 2014

Starting March 24, 2014, Legal Aid Ontario (LAO) is streamlining the refugee intake process by having all applicants call the Client Service Centre (CSC) to ensure consistency in financial and merit assessments.

Eligible applicants who request a staff service will then be referred to the Refugee Law Office in Toronto, the Integrated Legal Services Office in Ottawa, or the Hamilton District office. The staff office will contact applicants within 48 hours to schedule an appointment to discuss their case.

Applicants such as those with mental health needs who require assistance contacting the CSC can attend in person at the staff office, where someone will assist them with their legal aid application.

Applicants can call the CSC toll-free at 1-800-668-8258 (or 416-979-1446 in Toronto) to get legal aid help in over 200 languages from Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
