Legal Aid Ontario (LAO) and Davenport-Perth Neighbourhood and Community Health Centre are taking an integrated, holistic approach to meeting the legal needs of clients in the West Toronto area.
“The challenges and problems faced by Ontarians are neither simple nor one-dimensional. This is why partnerships like the one with Davenport-Perth are so important — it allows us to provide holistic services where people can access both legal and social services.”
LAO offers family law services and immigration services at the non-profit, multi-service community hub centre including:
- resources and support for family matters such as child custody, access, separation, child protection, support payments, consultations and referrals
- two-hour consultations for domestic violence victims with either a private lawyer or a staff lawyer at the centre
- mediation services for separating couples
- summary advice, referrals, brief service and legal representation for immigration matters
“The challenges and problems faced by Ontarians are neither simple nor one-dimensional,” says John McCamus, Chair of LAO. “This is why partnerships like the one with Davenport-Perth are so important — it allows us to provide holistic services where people can access both legal and social services.”
Working out of Davenport-Perth, LAO also partners with local community legal clinics by providing referrals for poverty law matters such as social assistance, housing matters, employment insurance and Canada Pension Plan appeals.
This new service is funded in part from the $30 million over four years in additional funding from the provincial government. This initiative is part of a larger program that uses the provincial investment to improve outcomes for low-income individuals and families by promoting sustainable improvements to legal aid services.
Legal services for clients are available Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Please call 416-656-8025 to arrange an appointment.
