Effective Feb. 10: Client Account Services statement improvements

Wednesday, February 12, 2014

As of Feb. 10, 2014, Legal Aid Ontario (LAO) is issuing new, improved statements to clients regarding the debt owing for legal fees.

What’s new:

  • Statements are available in French
  • One standard statement for each type of statement (monthly, Lien, Judgment Debtor)
  • The statement no longer indicates the estimated amount of legal fees. Instead, the statement provides account history, which includes:
    • The total amount paid to date for all lawyers’ bills
    • The total payments made to date
    • Any interest charges
    • The balance owing
  • If no payment has been made to the lawyer, the amount paid will show as a credit to be applied to future lawyer fees
  • For monthly payments, the Current Payment Information is presented, including:
    • The current monthly amount due
    • Any outstanding past amount due
    • The total now due
    • The payment due date
    • The current interest rate
  • For statements related to liens on property, the statement is redesigned to reflect the same changes as above
  • Lien statements will be sent when the first lawyer’s account is paid, and then sent every six months afterwards until the lien is paid or the debt satisfied.
  • Operational fixes have been made to ensure all clients receive accurate statements
