LAO to provide refugee services at Ottawa legal aid clinic and LAO’s Hamilton-Kitchener District office
Thursday, October 17, 2013
The French legal services clinic, located in east Ottawa’s Vanier Community Services Centre and Legal Aid Ontario (LAO)’s Hamilton-Kitchener District office will soon begin providing legal aid services to refugees.
These initiatives are important milestones in LAO’s efforts to diversify its refugee services model, support community-based client legal services and deliver cost-effective, efficient, quality legal representation.
The Vanier Community Service Centre is home to a French legal services clinic, which will add support to French-speaking refugee claimants to its other services, commencing October 21, 2013. The clinic also offers housing, income maintenance, immigration law, settlement, counselling and employment services for its community’s Francophones.
LAO’s Hamilton-Kitchener District office will welcome a full-time refugee lawyer to its staff in November 2013. This LAO employee will support refugee claimants in southwestern Ontario, including London and Windsor in addition to Hamilton, and will work closely with the Fort Erie Multicultural Centre to fill gaps in access to refugee services in Fort Erie.
The Vanier Clinic and the Hamilton-Kitchener District Office will:
- prepare Basis of Claim (BoC) forms and file them with the Refugee Protection Division (RPD) of the Immigration and Refugee Board
- prepare for and represent claimants at hearings of the RPD until the decision has been rendered
