Francophone clinic marks 10-year anniversary!

TORONTO – On Thursday, July 4, the Centre Francophone de Toronto (CFT)’s legal aid clinic celebrated its 10-year anniversary of improving access to justice for low-income Francophones.

Over the past ten years, there have been several significant events, including the Canadian government’s 2009 decision to lift the moratorium on removals to Burundi, Rwanda, and Liberia, the 2010 earthquake in Haiti, and the changes to Bill C-31 in 2012. The clinic prides itself on having provided a great deal of support to those affected in its surrounding community during those trying times, and providing the necessary support in their individual files.

Since its launch in 2003, the CFT — Ontario’s first French clinic — has drastically helped the francophone community by offering a wide range of legal aid services, including immigration law, housing and tenant law, and family law. The clinic also provides public legal information through workshops and information sessions.

“Every year, approximately 1,600 files are processed and over a hundred people benefit from our workshops,” says clinic director Aissa Nauthoo.

The CFT has expanded to add several new services over the past few years, including a summary legal advice line for the regions of Peel, Durham, and York (1-877-966-7345). To facilitate greater access to services, the clinic has developed key partnerships with several organizations in its region, as well as strengthened relationships with other departments within the Centre itself.

Legal Aid Ontario would like to extend its congratulations to the Centre Francophone de Toronto for their valuable support and is proud of their work to enhance access to justice in the francophone community.
