Legal Aid Ontario welcomes new staff to support clients in northern Ontario

Cochrane – Legal Aid Ontario’s (LAO) northeast district is pleased to welcome lawyer Emmanuelle Jean and Legal Aid Worker Hélène Savage. Its two newest employees will help meet the demand for legal aid services in the region’s north Cochrane corridor.
“Emmanuelle and Hélène can provide more timely and convenient service to this community’s most marginalized people than would be possible if staff duty counsel had to travel from Timmins every few weeks,” says Louise Huneault, District Area Director for LAO’s northeast district. “They are highly qualified bilingual professionals who live and work in the north, and can travel to courthouses within this part of the district.”
Ms. Jean and Ms. Savage will share office space with the Clinique juridique communautaire du Grand-Nord Community Legal Clinic in Kapuskasing – a central, accessible location in the north Cochrane district. They will also support people in need at the courthouse in Cochrane and, on criminal and family court days, in Cochrane, Smooth Rock Falls, Kapuskasing, Hearst and Hornepayne courthouses.
LAO created these new fulltime positions with the support of the Ministry of the Attorney General. The goal of this initiative is to provide local support to Ontario’s low-income people who would otherwise have to travel long distances for legal services.
Emmanuelle Jean is a family and criminal lawyer who was called to the bar in 2009. Before joining LAO, she worked in a rural Ontario private practice in eastern Ontario. Hélène Savage has been an LAO employee in Hamilton for the past two decades, and is returning to her home community.
