LAO yearly billing limits soon trackable online
Posted on: Thursday, May 24, 2012
As of May 27, 2012, lawyers will be able to view the status of their annual billing limit online instead of having to contact Legal Aid Ontario for updates.
The most recent enhancement to Legal Aid Online will provide lawyers with a daily summary of their billing positions: their annual limit, the percentage that has been used, the fees that have been paid, the fees scheduled for payment and those still under review. As well as being able to monitor their billing status online, lawyers will now also be notified of their status electronically instead of by mail when they have reached 50, 75, 90 and 100 per cent of their limit.
The annual billing limits, now measured in dollar values instead of hours to make tracking amounts easier, are determined by the lawyer’s highest tier. Annual billing limits now include all fees paid for hourly and block fee certificates, travel hours, duty counsel appearances, the Guaranteed Daily Rate, BCM cases and fees paid at the Northern and Complex Case rates. Area committee, Exception committee and Protocol Case Unit fees will continue to be excluded as well as all disbursements, travel mileage, student and law clerk fees.
