Legal Aid Ontario (LAO) has now assisted a landmark 10,000 clients through its telephone summary legal advice service. Started in December 2009, the service provides up to 20 minutes of summary legal advice – a professional opinion based on the facts of a specific legal situation – to eligible clients with family, criminal and immigration matters. The information is given over the phone to eligible clients, and is delivered by a legal aid staff lawyer knowledgeable in the relevant area of law.
Since being established, the service has greatly expanded to serve more clients. LAO currently has over 10 staff lawyers providing assistance over the phone to an average of 450 clients per week. Service is provided in 200 languages through simultaneous interpretation services.
