LAO committed to providing clients with high quality lawyers

Legal Aid Ontario (LAO) is committed to ensuring that all clients have access to high-quality legal advice by maintaining panel standards for lawyers performing legal aid work.
Panel standards are requirements developed by LAO to make sure that lawyers working with legal aid clients provide top quality service. To be accepted to a panel, or roster, lawyers must apply to LAO and meet particular requirements, such as the completion of a minimum number of cases. Lawyers must also commit to fulfilling continuing education requirements, annually.
LAO maintains panels for family, criminal, refugee, Gladue, extremely serious criminal matters, consent & capacity board, criminal duty counsel, family duty counsel and advice lawyer duty counsel. Of over 20,000 licensed lawyers in Ontario in private practice, 4,000 lawyers are currently on LAO’s panels.
LAO’s 2011 annual client feedback survey showed that over 90 per cent of clients felt their lawyers treated them with respect, clearly explained their options to them, provided helpful advice, and were easy to contact.
