E-payments most popular choice for LAO clients with contribution agreements

Half of all Legal Aid Ontario (LAO) clients who make contributions toward their legal aid certificate costs now use the convenient option of paying online.

Last year, LAO introduced several new payment options for clients with contribution agreements, including Internet banking, as part its ongoing effort to improve services for low-income Ontarians. Over the past year, making payments electronically has rapidly become the method of choice for clients. Previously, the only way to make payments was at a legal aid office.

Clients are also taking advantage of the other payment options –30 per cent are enrolled in LAO’s pre-authorized payment plan; more than double the number of people who used this method in 2009.

In 2009-10, LAO clients contributed more than $20 million towards the costs of their legal fees.

Some client prefer to continue to pay in person, with eighteen per cent making payments at LAO’s provincial office, and  2 per cent of clients paying their accounts through legal aid offices or local banks.
