New appeals process faster for clients

Legal Aid Ontario (LAO) has introduced a new appeals process across the province so clients can get faster decisions on their certificate appeals.

As part of its changes to client services, Legal Aid Ontario’s area committees now reflect its new “district” structure. The changes mean clients will receive quicker and more consistent decisions on their certificate appeals.

The new process includes faster review times; committees will consider appeals within three days. More frequent meetings will be held to allow members enough time to make decisions on each appeal.

While clients will no longer attend appeal meetings, they will now have more points of contact for help with their appeals. Legal aid staff are available at LAO’s toll-free call centre, or any of our 43 court-based locations and nine district offices.

Legal Aid Ontario is using technology to improve the new appeals process. Meetings are held by teleconference, with documents available for review by committee members on a secure website. District area committee members take part through the Internet and telephone.
