Clinic law advice lines for francophones
Posted on: Wednesday, June 16, 2010
French-speaking clients can now obtain free advice and referrals by telephone for many of the legal issues that are handled by community legal clinics. This service is being provided by toll-free summary legal advice lines, which have been funded as pilot projects by Legal Aid Ontario to increase access to legal services for the Francophone community.
Three pilot projects are already operating. The first covers Eastern Ontario. The second is for Northern Ontario and parts of central Ontario, including Barrie, Parry Sound and the Muskoka and Kawartha Lakes regions, and the third covers the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). A similar project is planned for Southwestern Ontario.
French-speaking callers in un-serviced or under-serviced areas of Northern or Eastern Ontario, or the Greater Toronto Area will be provided with telephone advice. Callers who have a local community legal clinic that provides the service required by them in French will be referred to that clinic. Efforts will be made to refer callers to other service providers where necessary.
The service is free of charge and all information exchanged is confidential. Advice is not offered for family law, criminal law, or other legal issues not listed below, but information is provided about other available services.
