Seminar for Criminal Lawyers representing Survivors of Domestic Violence and other forms of Trauma and Abuse
Posted on: Thursday, August 27/09
Legal Aid Ontario is hosting a free seminar for criminal lawyers representing clients who are survivors of domestic violence and other forms of trauma. Clients facing criminal charges may have a history of being abused, which may be an underlying issue that is never fully explored by either the client or counsel. At this seminar, lawyers will learn:
- how to identify when a history of domestic abuse/ trauma is an issue
- helpful practice tips and insights
- how to raise these issues sensitively without re-traumatizing clients
- where to refer your clients, or where to get more information to assist with preparing these cases
This event will be held on Monday, September 14, 2009 from 5:00 pm - 7:30 pm. All criminal lawyers and criminal duty counsel who work with legally aided clients, as well as lawyers and law students considering doing this work are invited to attend
Persons may participate in the seminar via the Internet, or, if in the Toronto area, please join us at Legal Aid's main office at the Atrium on Bay, 40 Dundas Street West, suite 200 in the Basswood training room. Legal Aid Ontario will recognize the seminar as continuing legal education. A light dinner will be provided.
