Additional hours for SVO hearings
The Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA) allows the Crown to make an application after a finding of guilt to have a matter declared a serious violent offence (SVO). The finding can have serious concequences if a youth accumulates three serious violent offence findings. In recognition of the time requirements likely to be involved in defending applications to have a matter declared a serious violent offence, LAO has made additional hours available for an SVO hearing.
If the Crown applies to have a matter declared a serious violent offence, counsel should contact the area office and ask for an additional authorization to be added to the certificate. The new authorization is as follows:
- Additional 10 hours to respond to application for a Serious Violent Offence determination under YCJA.
