Getting legal help
Family law
Family Law Information Centre (FLIC)
What is a FLIC?
Family Law Information Centres offer free assistance and information on family law issues. FLICs are located in most courts that deal with family law matters, and meet the needs of clients who do not have a lawyer, or are new to the court system.
At the FLIC, you can find brochures and information about family law in Ontario, or speak with an advice lawyer.
Advice lawyer service
At the FLIC, advice lawyers from Legal Aid Ontario can answer questions, provide summary legal advice, and review legal documents for family law issues. Contact your local FLIC to find out when the advice lawyer is available.
Mediation services
Legal Aid Ontario offers family mediation services in the Milton courthouse for low-income clients with family law matters such as child support, custody and access. A mediator is a trained, neutral professional who will work with both sides to try and find a settlement. Both parties agree to work with a mediator to resolve problems outside of the courtroom. In this type of mediation, sessions can last from two to three hours. This service is free of charge to low-income individuals. If you are interested in scheduling a mediation session at the Milton courthouse, please call 905-878-7281 ext.3447.
