Expression of Interest:
Criminal Litigation Counsel


Legal Aid Ontario (LAO) is a vibrant, progressive, internationally recognised leader in the provision of access to justice.

LAO continues to invite qualified lawyers to submit an Expression of Interest for Criminal Litigation Contractors. Criminal Litigation Contractors from the private bar will provide legal services for serious cases, as needed, for clients who currently cannot retain qualified counsel on legal aid certificates.

The successful candidates will be responsible for supporting the Major Case Management Office, conducting litigation of serious criminal trials, including homicides, and providing oversight and management of other cases.

Lawyers wishing to be considered will be required:

  • To provide legal services to LAO clients and LAO for the duration of the contract;
  • To demonstrate expertise and experience in the provision of legal services in respect of the litigation of complex and high-profile criminal cases;
  • To demonstrate a history of effective practice management and administrative skills;
  • To conduct cases and manage caseloads in accordance with LAO’s case management and litigation policies and protocols.

All applications must include the following:

  • Cover letter detailing the nature of interest and qualifications
  • Current C.V./resume with complete contact information
  • Legal Aid Ontario solicitor number or application to join legal aid panel
  • Statement confirming current membership on ‘Extremely Serious Matters” panel or application for membership
  • Statement confirming membership in good standing with Law Society of Upper Canada
  • Name provided to Revenue Canada Agency (CRA) for business registration purposes
  • GST Registration number or exemption status
  • The following certification and applicant’s signature:
