Legal Aid Worker


Assignment: This is an 11-month contract.

Location: Thunder Bay Family Law Office

Reports to: Director, Family Law Office

Area of Search: Open

Current Status of the Job: This position will be vacant.


Primary Function:
This position involves assisting lawyers in all aspects of family law court proceedings and resolving family law disputes.

Main Duties of the Job:

  • Preparing and drafting all documents in family law and child protection proceedings.
  • Preparing billings and compiling records and client reports.
  • Assisting in case management procedures and evaluating legal issues.
  • Maintaining tickler system and managing family law case load under a lawyer's supervision.
  • Performing searches and commissioning affidavits of clients.
  • Speaking to matters at Court occasionally and interviewing clients to gather case information.
  • Arranging for the service of documents and filing materials in Court.
  • Keeping track of time limits for the serving and filing of Court documents.
  • Performing other duties as required.

Required Skills & Experiences:

  • Possess significant knowledge of LAO policies, rules and procedures.
  • Possess experience in the area of family law and all aspects of civil procedure.
  • Well-developed written, research, customer service and relationship-building skills.
  • Well developed interview and communication skills.
  • Sound judgement.
  • Good organizational skills including designing and maintaining a filing system
  • Intermediate to advanced skill in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, DivorceMate and specialized family law programs.
  • Previous or current experience working with Aboriginal people, organizations and communities is an asset
  • First hand knowledge of Aboriginal culture and Aboriginal issues is an asset
  • Ability to work under time constraints in a fast-paced, challenging environment.
  • French language skills, both oral and written are a definite asset
  • The ability to communicate in Ojibway, Cree or Oji-Cree is a definite asset

Classification: S4

Salary Range: $43,801.00 to $65,372.00 per annum
