Neighbourhood Legal Services is a community legal clinic, funded by Legal Aid Ontario, serving the east side of downtown Toronto. We have been serving this community for over 40 years.

The successful applicant will have experience in the practice of immigration law and be able to take on a significant case load, including cases in the Federal Court. The immigration practice at NLS does not include the processing of refugee claims.

As well the successful candidate will have an understanding of legal practice in a community legal clinic, and a demonstrated interest in issues affecting disadvantaged individuals and groups. Experience in and an understanding of human rights law, especially as it affects low income clients living with mental illnesses and/or other disabilities will be very helpful. A working knowledge of related areas of law will also be valued.

In addition to case work, the staff lawyer:

  • will be engaged in law reform activities, public legal education and community outreach projects;
  • will work with articling students, student interns and volunteers; and,
  • will regularly partner with community agencies and other community legal clinics and legal service providers.

This is a full-time 15 month contract position to fill a vacancy due to a secondment. There is a possibility this position will become permanent. The expected start date is early January 2018.
