Northern Region of Legal Clinics

Community legal clinics are funded by Legal Aid Ontario. We provide legal advice and representation to low-income residents. The legal clinics of the Northern Region are seeking an employment law Community Legal Worker to work collaboratively with eleven Legal Clinics. The primary goal of this initiative is to enhance the capacity for the Northern Region to provide full employment law services to low income individuals residing in Ontario’s North.

The successful candidate will be stationed at the Algoma Community Legal Clinic (in Sault Ste. Marie), from which he or she will work directly with legal clinics covering an area from Kenora in the northwest, to Moosonee in the far north, to Manitoulin Island and Bracebridge in the south, and to North Bay in the northeast. The position requires travel to all of the above legal clinics and possibly on occasion their respective satellite offices.

The successful candidate will play an important role in enhancing the North Region’s capacity to provide full employment law services including summary advice, brief services, and representation before administrative tribunals and courts. In addition to the provision of legal services under the supervision of the Director of Legal Services of the Algoma Community Legal Clinic, the successful candidate will collaborate with the northern clinics to design the employment law service that reflects the local needs of their communities. Additional duties will include providing training, community development, public legal education and systemic initiatives.

Qualifications include:

  • Relevant experience in employment law issues specifically related to the Employment Standards Act and wrongful dismissal;
  • Knowledge of Employment Insurance, Occupational Health & Safety, provincial/federal human rights legislation, and Canada Labour Code is an asset;
  • Effective advocacy skills;
  • Commitment to social justice and broader poverty law issues and an interest in community advocacy;
  • Ability to deliver high quality legal services to disadvantaged individuals;
  • Ability to travel to and regularly attend at all clinic locations;
  • Driver’s licence;
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and with local clinics;
  • Membership in good standing with the Law Society of Upper Canada as a paralegal licensee is an asset;
  • Ownership of a vehicle is an asset.
  • Ability to work in French is an asset.
